Func Surface 1030 XL Mouse Pad Review

I usually like to spend a fair amount of time testing out various mice on mouse pads, so I’ll be using this new pad throughout the week for when I’m working and gaming, with more emphasis on the latter. I also spend a fair amount of time editing photos and using illustrator so these will also be part of the testing process. The crucial aspect that a decent gaming pad should have is the ability for all mice to glide with very little friction on its surface, so that is something I’m keen to pick up on. For the tests, I’ve got 3 mice I’ll be using, a Tt eSPORTS Level 10 M, a Roccat Kone Pure and a Razer Naga Hex.

Gaming

The first tests for the mouse pad are the gaming sessions. This will produce rapid and precise mouse movements, which will test the surface quality. My current favourite game is Battlefield 3, which not only has vehicles with different sensitivities, but also requires small to large mouse movements to make the quick shots. Jumping into a game, it was noticeable from the start just how well our mouse glided on the surface of the Func pad – and I mean really well, in fact, I don’t think I’ve reviewed a mouse pad with slicker qualities (on the smooth side) and all the mice I threw at it just glided right off. Even for the smaller movements, there was adequate friction to control the short distances travelled and even more resistance on the rougher side. The size is perfect for most gamers, as even mice with low DPI have plenty of room to manoeuvre.

General

As I’ve already stated in the gaming section, both small and large movements were greeted with a lovely clean glide, but with enough resistance to not over compensate for the smaller movements. When I was using Illustrator however, those smaller, finer movements were much easier to make on the rough side, as the smooth was just too slick. I’d also like to point out, it’s important to keep the mouse pad clear of any crumbs or dirt as the smallest piece of debris feels horrible when moving the mouse – just as bad as fingernails on a chalkboard.

Comfort

Comfort-wise, the Func mouse pad isn’t ideal for those long sessions at the computer, just like all hard mouse pads. However, if you are after sheer performance, then this mouse pad would be perfect for the shorter periods of time . Being made of a hard material also means it has great water resistant properties, making it very easy to wipe up spillages and clean.
