As we already know the GTX 670 is going to be based off the GK104 chip, the same chip the GTX 680 is constructed from. The only difference between the two is that the GTX 670 is lower down in the naming sequence and consequently will be a cut down version, although judging from the performance figures you really won’t be losing that much performance. Now we’re not totally sure if the performance of Tweaktown’s sample GTX 670 is indicative of actual retail performance, but given that the launch date is soon we expect it will be an accurate reflection. In percentage terms, the GTX 670 looks like it may only be 5-10% slower than its bigger brother the GTX 680.
Once the GTX 670 is on the market, there will be two Nvidia cards faster than the HD 7970. The GTX 670 should therefore offer price competitive performance against AMD’s HD 7000 series cards, in the face of the recent price cuts from AMD, as the GTX 670 will be a solid 10% or more cheaper than the GTX 680. It is possible that the GTX 670 release could spur even more price cuts from AMD to maintain the traditional AMD price advantage.
The story behind Tweaktown’s dispute with Nvidia is also quite an interesting read, the dispute is best summarised by the following quote, in which Tweaktown’s owner, Cameron Wilmot, describes his attitude to Nvidia: “you don’t play nice with us, we won’t play nice with you”. Tweaktown’s early release of the GTX 670 performance figures sparked outrage from Motherboards.org owner Elric Phares, slamming Tweaktown for a selfish move that will be of detriment to company’s that play by the rules, like his company.
