HyperX Cloud Stinger Wireless Gaming Headset Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The HyperX Cloud Stinger Wireless is available now on Amazon for just £69.99, which is odd, as HyperX are selling it for a £100 on their website; sort that our HyperX, £100 is way too much. However at £69.99, it’s extremely competitive, coming in £20 cheaper than the Corsair HS70 and £15 cheaper than the Turtle Beach 450. In the US, the headset is available for just $69.99.

Overview

HyperX has done a fantastic job bringing the Cloud Stinger Wireless up to date. They’ve tweaked a lot of little details, and a few big ones, but overall it still looks and feels like the original. In some ways, I would like to see them change the design a little more as it looks a bit bulky, albeit it doesn’t feel bulky when worn. Actually, it’s 3 grams lighter than the old one, not that you can tell.

Performance

The biggest things for me aren’t wireless, or how a headset looks. Everything comes down to how it sounds. Fortunately, HyperX is not new to the premium audio stuff, and the Cloud series has a rock-solid reputation already. The Stingers new drivers deliver fantastic sound quality regardless of what you throw at them. From quietly listening to some podcasts to having hanging out on Mumble while gaming, to cranking up some old-school thrash metal; it all sounds great.

Wireless

The 17-hour battery life claim is pretty much on the money. We’ve had them running for about 14 hours, but mostly they were being ragged in terms of volume for testing. That’s still a huge amount of time though, and unlikely you’ll really game that long in one day. I’m not saying people don’t game 14-17 hours a day, but most don’t so the battery life is spot on I think. Plus, with the dongle just being plug and play ready, no mucking about pairing, you can really just jump right into the action, which is always nice.
