Without a doubt, the new Intel i9-9980XE deserves the “Extreme Edition” name, as it’s an incredibly powerful CPU overall. However, it’s up against some very strong competition both from Intel themselves and AMD’s ThreadRipper CPUs. Firstly, it scored our highest ever 3DMark score, and that’s a very confident start for gamers and overclockers. It posted our third fastest WPrime score too, knocking the 2950X down to fourth fastest. Furthermore, it beat out the older 7980XE in CineBench too, scoring about 350 points higher on all cores. It decimated our 4K transcoding benchmark too, rendering the video at a whopping 92 FPS. That’s our highest score, but is the same as the Threadripper 2920X.
Overall, it’s a strong result and offers some improvements over the previous model, but nothing too drastic. A fast CPU it was, and a slightly faster one it is now.
