Intel Shuts Down A780 Rumours By Saying the GPU ‘Never Existed’

Earlier this year, information appeared online suggesting that of the upcoming Intel Arc desktop graphics cards, the A780 would represent their top specification model. In other words, the A780 was as good as their first-generation GPUs were going to get! – Following various announcements recently about the A770 and A750, however, this has raised a little confusion among consumers as to where the A780 actually is!

Well, following a Twitter post by Intel’s ‘@ryanshrout‘ we have our answer. – Put simply, there isn’t going to be an A780. Why? Well, apparently, there never was an A780 in the first place!

Intel Arc A780 – The Phantom GPU

Truth be told, nobody seems to be entirely certain where the first rumours of an A780 graphics card first began. Overall though, it does likely come down to one of two possibilities. Firstly, leaked information surrounding the A3XX and A7XX series possibly got a little muddled up resulting in an erroneous claim of a flagship A780. A rumour possibly assisted by the obvious (but somewhat lazy) coincidence that Nvidia flagship GPUs used to be X80/XX80 models (such as the 1080 for example).

Alternatively, and from a more cynical standpoint, there was going to be an A780, but due to either time or design constraints, the GPU simply never managed to get over the line. – Given how many delays Arc has seen, I wouldn’t rule either possibility out. At this point though, Intel is pretty clear that there is going to be no A780 graphics card.

The A770 is, categorically, their top-spec design from the Arc desktop series!

When Will We See A Release Date?

Intel is currently in a full-blown assault mode with Arc press releases and general product announcements. Despite the lack of a confirmed release date just yet, it seems almost certain that their various GPU models are 99.9% guaranteed to land within the next 2-4 weeks. – With indications that their upper 7XX models might actually be a lot better than many might’ve initially hoped though, fingers crossed they can get their prices right, at the moment, seems to be a matter of opinion and perspective!

I do, however, love that one person responded to ‘@ryanshrout‘s’ Twitter post only to point out that while they had shut down the A780, they hadn’t denied the existence of the A790! – I guess sometimes you just can’t win!
