Intel already dominates the netbook and desktop market, so it is important that they begin branching out into the world of smartphone’s. They plan to have a new smartphone released by 2012, they are currently working with a number of smartphone manufacturers to get one released by then. Paul Otellini Intel’s CEO, stated they would not be adopting and licensing chips from ARM. This way they would make less profit.
You may already know that Intel has invested heavily in mobile technology, It would appear that Intel’s latest Atom family chip, Medfield is efficient and powerful enough to compete with other current smartphones out there. Intel also demonstrated the Tri-Gate 3D Transistor design earlier this month, which allows for even better power consumption. This is vital in the smartphone market and will be a strong selling point.
I am really interested to see how Intel do here, it will be great to have such a large company entering the smartphone market. In my opinion, this can only be viewed as a good thing.
