E3 is one of the biggest gaming events on the planet but unfortunately, it seems to be meeting its end after the 2023 event was cancelled and now it appears that the LA Tourism Board considers the 2024 and 2025 events cancelled as well.
As shared by insidergaming, a document from the LA City Tourism Commission has been revealed with a page relating to Citywide Convention Sales which has an * statement “Includes E3 cancellations for 2024 & 2025. This definitely heralds the end of the event which over the years has been getting replaced with many publishers opting for digital events such as Nintendo Direct or PlayStation Showcase. Doing their own digital events in the form of live streams. Doing this saves companies a fair bit of cash that would be spent on a physical booth and hotels for the event, and offers a much more accessible but unengaging alternative.
As of now the events are not officially cancelled and we could very well be surprised with a 2024 event but I highly doubt that will be the case. GamesIndustry.Biz also reached out to Stanley Pierre-Louis, the president and CEO of ESA to ask whether there will be another E3 convention and in response said “We’re committed to providing an industry platform for marketing and convening” and is going to try and find the right balance to suit the needs of the current industry. It seems as though they aren’t giving up on E3 but if it does continue it won’t be the same as we’ve seen before.
