The ThinkStation P720 features a dual processor socket C621 motherboard that has twelve DIMM slots for DDR4-2666 memory. It has 3x PCIe x16 slots, 1x PCIe x8 slot, 1x PCIe x4 slot, and a single legacy PCI slot for expansion. In terms of storage, it has four 3.5-inch drive bays, two 5.25-inch drive bays and two M.2 connectors, which are now directly mountable to the motherboard. Previous Lenovo workstations made use of adapters, so this frees up the room on-board.

Users can install up to two NVIDIA Quadro P6000 or GP100 GPUs, as well as up to two 28-core Xeon processors. Up to 384GB of memory can be onboard.

Since it supports more components, it also comes with a larger power supply at a 92% efficient 1400W unit. In comparison, the ThinkStation P720 is available with a 92% efficient 690W or 900W unit, depending on the configuration.
