Marvel Heroes Set to Shutdown After Disney Cancel Contract With Developer

Marvel Heroes represented one of the (formally) many free-to-play style online RPG’s. While never being acclaimed, the game garnered a strong player base. That unfortunately is all set to end with Disney announcing the cancellation of the contract with the developer.

Originally starting in 2013 as a PC only, Marvel Heroes expanded to console earlier this year and with some success. Re branding as ‘Marvel Heroes Omega’ the game built a solid player base and even as early as October this year, new content was being added.

While Starcraft 2 switching to free-to-play was a major announcement. It is one of few recent examples of this happening.

Marvel Heroes operates with similar styles of RPG element as seen in Diablo or Baldurs Gate. Based on this, it was able to tap into that free-to-play environment well. Alas, all good things must end, but this will leave some wondering if its termination is a bit too early.

Disney deals the death blow

The game, developed by Gazillion Entertainment had a contract with Disney to run the game. Unfortunately, there seems to have been either a disagreement or a parting of the waves as in a report via Polygon, Disney has confirmed the end of the agreement. This, by proxy, means the end of the game.

There is clearly some success to be had in free-to-play titles. Paladins for example goes from strength to strength with over 11 million players.

In a statement, Disney has said: “We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”

While an exact date of termination has not yet been announced, it seems clear that Disney have no interest in keeping the game going.
