Metro Exodus and Battlefield V DLSS – A Performance Boost With Compromises

Performance

Metro Exodus

When we first benchmarked Metro Exodus at 1440p, we saw some fairly promising results. Even the more “affordable” RTX 2070 card was able to hit just shy of 40 FPS with Ultra graphics and High Ray Tracing settings enabled. Sure, the FPS could be higher, but the fidelity of the image was something to behold. Moving up, the RTX 2080 scored a bit better, with 46 FPS, and the mighty 2080 Ti was around 59 FPS. These are powerful cards, but Metro is a real gut buster when it comes to taxing graphics cards.

Enabling DLSS certainly had an interesting effect on the performance though. The RTX 2070 increased to 46 FPS, putting it in line with the stock RTX 2080 performance. Meanwhile, the RTX 2080 increased to almost 55 FPS, again putting that close to the 2080 Ti performance. However, the RTX 2080 finally exceed 60 FPS, scoring a much more impressive 69 FPS overall.

The 4K results were less impressive in some ways, but still impressive in their own way. The problem is that with these graphics settings, even the RTX 2080 Ti was only hitting 35 FPS in the benchmark at 4K which is pretty brutal. However, the RTX 2070 saw a 10 FPS boost with DLSS enabled. Furthermore, the RTX 2080 boosted by 13 FPS, and the RTX 2080 Ti by 11 FPS. That’s a nice improvement and I suspect with updates, it’ll improve even further.

Battlefield V

Metro is not an easy game to get running smoothly, but Battlefield V is pretty demanding in its own right also. At 1440p, using High graphics with the High Ray Tracing profile we saw just 30 FPS from the RTX 2070, 40 FPS from the RTX 2080, and 57 FPS from the RTX 2080 Ti at 1440p. What I didn’t expect was around 50% improvement just by turning on DLSS. The RTX 2070 gained another 15 FPS, taking it to 45 FPS total, while the RTX 2080 went from 40 to 57! Unfortunately, the RTX 2080 Ti doesn’t support DLSS at this resolution on this game; WTF is that all about?

The 4K results were much more impressive though, with the RTX 2070 going from a pathetic 27 FPS to 45 FPS easily enough. We also saw the RTX 2080 go from a cinematic 32 FPS to a much smoother 47 FPS. However, the most impressive and frustrating result is the RTX 2080 Ti. It went from 42 FPS to 59 FPS, just 1 FPS away from that golden number. I’ll take it though, and obviously, we saw it above 60 FPS in many scenes, but our chosen test scene is rather demanding and that’s how we like it.
