Its been 25 years since Microsoft last changed their logo, way back in 1987. Finally, they feel its time for a new logo – a fresh start to take Windows 8 forward into a new era for Microsoft. The new logo features the name “Microsoft” in the Segoe font — a proprietary font used in the firm’s products and marketing for several years — alongside a multicolored Windows symbol intended to “signal the heritage but also signal the future.”
The new corporate logo and image came into use as of yesterday, appearing on Microsoft.com, its Facebook page, Twitter page and will be featured in upcoming TV commercials.
Speaking with the Seattle Times, Microsoft’s general manager of brand strategy Jeff Hansen commented on previous logos. The first logo used from 1975 to 1979 used “Micro” and “Soft” on separate lines to reflect the fact co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen made the name Microsoft from a combination of microcomputers and software.
The second logo used for just one year between 1980 and 1981 reflected the rising video game culture of the time. The third logo was used for four years and introduced an “o” with strikes and lines through it. This was altered slightly for the logo we all recognise today that’s been around since 1987, featuring a slice in the “o” and the joining of the “f” and “t”.
