Microsoft Will Focus On Entry-Level Smartphones Over Next 12 Months

Networkworld.com reports that Microsoft’s intention for the next year is to expand aggressively in the entry-level smartphone market. Microsoft’s Vice President for advertising and online marketing apparently stated that:

“We are going to spend a lot of time in the next 12 months building a real presence on the low-end smartphone market with developing countries.”

Indeed Microsoft’s strategy seems sensible as the Nokia Lumia 520 is currently the best selling Windows Phone 8 device according to recent statistics. With Microsoft in total control of Nokia’s handset division, and Nokia currently excelling at the entry level part of the market, it seems logical for Microsoft to push the entry level Lumias.

While Western smartphone markets at the mid to high-end have been crowded out by fierce competition from the likes of Samsung, LG, Apple and HTC it seems sensible for Microsoft to not only pursue the entry level part of the market (where most of the money is) but also emerging markets in developing countries (where most of the money will be in the future).

As a result of this new strategy from Microsoft we can probably expect to see a range of handsets from Nokia that are more entry level than the Lumia 520, aka below it, to assist with expanding into the developing markets.
