Mio MiVue 766 WIFI Smart Dashcam Review

Introduction Security isn't just for your home, it is also an important factor while you're on the go. Today I'm taking a look at one of Mio's newest dashcams, the MiVue 766 WIFI. Where most dashcams stick to recording video, the MiVue 766 WIFI goes beyond that with a bunch of smart features. From Facebook live-stream to safety alerts, the dashcam does it all. MiVue 766 WIFI Let us start out with how the company describes the MiVue 766 WIFI on their website. "Simplicity at its finest, undisputable picture quality, connecting you always, and data that matters." That sounds pretty good to start with and I can already tell you that I love this dashcam. It couldn't be much simpler to set it up. Connect it with power and you're ready to go. Sure, there are more options, but you don't need them. You can start driving and everything will be recorded. The picture quality comes from the Sony optic sensor and a 140◦ wide-angle lens. Together, they let the MiVue 766 WIFI capture everything your eyes can see. From registration plates to road signs, even in low-light conditions. The always-connected feature is a funny one. Either you'll love it or you'll think that it's completely unnecessary. You can connect the dashcam to your mobile hotspot or share your mobile data connection via Wi-Fi and allow the dashcam to go online. With that feature, you can live-stream via Facebook to your friends or family. Let them enjoy the ride you're taking and see what you're seeing. GPS is also built-in and the data is stored along with your video. With GPS, it also captures the actual speed you're driving. Lens, Sensor, and Video Enough of the introduction, let us get to the specifications, features, and function. Mio's MiVue 766 WIFI records video in Full-HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution at 30fps. It does this with a Sony IMX323 (Exmor) 2M video sensor and an AIT8328Q optic sensor. The camera is equipped with an F1.8 aperture and a wide-angle lens which allows you to capture 140°. The recorded videos are stored in MP4 format with H.264. That makes it efficient when it comes to storage as well as further editing of the video. Audio is also recorded. The MiVue 766 WIFI can also record well at night with its night mode. After all, who does all their driving during bright daytime? Built-In Display MiVue 766 WIFI has a pretty good display built in. With a 2.7" size, it's big enough to be useful, yet not so large that it gets in the way and blocks your sight. The display features a touchscreen which makes it easy to use. We've all tried those devices with just four buttons and they're a pain to use. With the MiVie 766 WIFI, you just touch the screen and that makes the whole thing a lot more user-friendly. With the 2.7" screen, even those with sausage fingers and bad coordination will hit the right spot. Camera Features As the MiVue 766 WIFI name suggests, the dashcam comes with built-in Wi-Fi. With it, there's no need to remove the memory card to watch or download your videos. Mio has a MiVue Pro app available which is free and easy to use. It will guide you through the connection setup after which the dashcam and mobile phone will be connected. But it doesn't stop there. With a Wi-Fi connection between the dashcam and your mobile phone, the camera can share your 3G/4G connection through the hotspot function. That brings us to the next feature, the ability to live stream your drive to Facebook. Let your friends or family come along on a ride through the countryside. Or maybe your mom is worried whether you get safely home or not. Whatever the reason you want to stream your drive, you can. While the Wi-Fi feature is cool and convenient, the built-in GPS is perfect for a dashcam. GPS allows for a lot of extra functionality from basic speed and coordinate recording to advanced overlay maps for your route. The 3-axis G-sensor will make sure that all sudden events, such as an accident, are recorded and saved in a place where they won't be overwritten quickly. Speaking of saving the footage, the MiVue 766 WIFI support microSD cards up to 128GB. There's a small battery built-in, but it's only 240mAh. While that doesn't sound like a lot, it's plenty to make sure that the camera will record a few seconds after the power was cut. It can be powered via USB or the included 12V plug for the car. Physical and Environment Aspects We're dealing with a camera that isn't much larger than the display. It measures a mere 52.5 by 87.8 by 31.9 mm and weighs 100 grammes. The temperatures in which it can operate is another important factor. The MiVue 766 WIFI can operate in temperatures from minus 10 to plus 60. It should work during cold winter mornings as well as on sunny summer days. The camera is mounted via a suction cup system as it's well known among car accessories. The camera itself is mounted with the ability to rotate and tilt, allowing you to get the right angle out of your windscreen. Smart Features With all the sensors, data, and features available, the dashcam can do more than record videos. For example, you get Safety Camera Warning with lifetime updates. There are some countries where it isn't allowed, so check the list if that's a feature you're getting the MiVue 766 WIFI for. Never run into a speed trap again. If you drive properly, you won't need the above - but you might love the next features. Lane departure and forward collision warnings are also available. Head-light reminder, fatigue alert, speed limit alert, and cruise control reminder are other useful functions of the dashcam. Optional Accessories There is a really cool optional accessory for the series and that is the rear camera called the A30. This tiny add-on camera allows you to get the same video quality out the rear side of your car. It is also an addon which will help when parking. There's about as good a chance that an accident will happen from the rear as from the front, so having both sides covered is a great idea, any day. It is, however, not a cheap addon. After all, it requires the same quality video components as the MiVue 766 WIFI. At the time of this review, it costs £66.13, down from the regular £69.99. MiVue Manager Companion Software The companion software is available for Mac and Windows and it's called the MiVue Manager. The software interface allows playback of the recorded videos with speed control. You can also share videos on social media sites such as YouTube and Facebook with ease. A great feature, and one of my favourites, is the GPS overlay for Google Maps. Get a moving map of your vehicle's router which is synchronised with the video. A similar feature is available for the g-forces with the ability to show the driving direction and 3-axis g-forces in sync with your video. Browsing and organising features are also part of the package. Mio MiVue 766 WIFI Packaging The Mio MiVue 766 WIFI comes in a full-colour printed box. The top has an image showcasing the camera from both sides as well as a list of feature highlights. The bottom side has more details on the specifications, from recording quality to safety warnings. The system requirements for the companion software is printed on the bottom of the box. The sides also feature a bit of content such as a photo of the dashcam setup option and a list of what's in the box. When you open the box, you're presented with the camera right away. The inner packaging also reminds you of the benefits of a registration at Mio's site. What's In The Box? So, what's in the box? Well, there is the MiVue 766 WIFI dashcam itself. The lens has a protective film cover which you need to remember to remove. But you can wait with that until you have it mounted. There are three notes included. A quick-start guide, a warranty statement, and a registration note. Registration of your dashcam will also give you a 20% lifetime discount on Mio MiVue accessories. There aren't a whole lot of accessories, as you don't need them. There is a mounting bracket and a car charger with USB. A Closer Look at the Details The 12V car charger has a max of 1.4A which allows it to deliver about 16 watts. The cable is sturdy and thick as well as quite long. Making a proper cable routing to the camera shouldn't be a problem in most cars. The mounting system works as we've seen on such systems for ages, through sucktion on the windscreen. It is a proven and effective method. The camera is removable from the mounting system without actually removing it from the screen. It allows you to take it down and put it in your glove compartment, for example. A useful thing to do if you're parked in an area which you don't trust. The mounting system has cable routing hooks which allow you to run the cable and make sure that it doesn't dangle in front of the lens. The camera is connected to the mount with a ball system. It allows you to rotate and angle the camera to the proper position. Camera Details The camera itself doesn't have a whole lot to show and explain. The use of a touchscreen allowed Mio to keep things simple. The front has the logo printed next to the lens, followed by a mesh for the speaker and microphone. We can also spot the mounting spot at the top. The only feature on the rear side is the 2.7" touchscreen. One side has a micro USB port for data and power as well as a headphone jack. The other side has the only physical button next to the microSD card slot which can take up to 128GB. Memory Card I got a memory card along with this camera, allowing me to use it with nothing extra. This was sent by the PR company and isn't part of the product when you purchase it. The included memory card is a GOODRAM micro SDHC card with UHS1 Class 10 speed rating. It holds 8GB data and comes with a full-size SD card adapter included. The little card is rated for up to 60MB/s reading and 10MB/s writing speed. It comes with a lifetime warranty and is available with up to 128GB capacity. Device Control via Touch Screen The easiest way to show the on-screen controls of the MiVue 766 WIFI is with a video. I'm taking a short tour through the available options in the video below. Please note that I'm standing awkwardly to make sure the camera records the video without me blocking the lens, which is why I accidentally left the menu a couple of times. There are no issues with the touch reaction, it works wonderfully. https://youtu.be/9eUbjnodgGQ Mobile Companion Application There is a mobile companin app available for iOS and Android which is called MiVue Pro. With it, you can connect to your dashcam for various functionality. The app will guide you through the setup process and the enabling of your Wi-Fi hotspot. From the app, you can watch the live video stream from the camera and you're also able to send the stream into the web via your Facebook account. The only other function here is to enable a crosshair to find the center of the camera. There are a few settings for the dashcam available through the app, and some information to read out. Stored videos and photos can't be viewed directly from the camera, but they can be downloaded to your phone with ease. You're also able to check up on the storage and check for updates. Desktop Companion Application It can be difficult to showcase a video app with just images which is why I chose to record it instead. I recorded the app MiVue Manager with a screen recorder to show the various features. The capture program didn't record the menu popups which shows colour options, languages, update function and similar. That's why it might look a little weird at times. Printing, video backup, and screen capture isn't shown either. But it all works like a charm. https://youtu.be/xJ0yXfKR-jQ Video Tests Testing the video quality of a dashcam is quite easy. All I have to do is to mount it in my car and go for a ride. On this page, you'll find videos with various weather scenarios, showcasing the camera's abilities in each. I did have more interesting videos, or so I thought. They had sadly been overwritten due to the use of a small memory card. So, if you want to keep more than the last couple of days of video, use a large memory card. Driving in Rain Rainy weather can be very tricky for a camera. The movement of the wipers, the distortion through the water, and focus changes due to the raindrops can be hard on low-tech cameras. https://youtu.be/AfZTh51juvw Driving at Dusk There is a special light when the sun goes down. It's also one of the times where a lot can happen due to the sun blinding other drivers or they're just tired from a long day at work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRbgJlOJJVU Driving at Night My night-time video also features rain, making it twice as hard for the camera. The sun is high in the sky and there is neither too little nor too much light. https://youtu.be/KH0i4yxzoUw Gyro Events The G-Sensor detects events happening, and sometimes it triggers when there's no real danger such as in the two events in this video. Hitting a bump in the street or a speed bump a little too fast can do this. This isn't a bad thing as we much rather have too many events recorded than too few. https://youtu.be/tPcw4oBgKzY Final Thoughts and Pricing Pricing At the time of this review, Mio's MiVue 766 WIFI is available for £130.59 on Amazon. The optional A30 rear-view camera is available for £69.99 while an uninterrupted power cable is available for £24.73. Conclusion The Mio MiVue 766 WIFI was the first dashcam I had in my own car, and what an experience it was. The setup couldn't be simpler: Mount it, connect it, insert memory card: done. Sure, there are a lot more settings and options, but they're optional. We got some really great video from the MiVue 766 WIFI which doesn't come as a surprise. It's equipped with some high-end hardware and lens, allowing it to capture high-def video in Full HD resolution. The 30 FPS recording also makes sure that you don't miss a frame. Speaking of missed frames, there were none at all. The MiVue 766 WIFI does an amazing job all the way through. Advanced Functionality Besides the basic dashcam functionality, MiVue 766 WIFI has a bunch of driving aid features. From fatigue alert to driving too close to the person in front of you. It comes with it all. The GPS and Wi-Fi features give it another edge over basic entry-level devices. GPS allows you to see the actual speed your driving and get map overlays for your videos. It also generally keeps a record of your driving activities. The wireless connection, on the other hand, allows you to connect it to your mobile's Wi-Fi hotspot. With it, you can easily transfer videos without having to remove the memory card, but it doesn't stop there. You can even live-stream your video to social media such as Facebook. Controlling the MiVue 766 WIFI is a breeze thanks to the large built-in touchscreen. It is responsive and useful. It can even show vital information such as your actual speed while you're driving. Final Thoughts Generally, it looks great! The dashcam has a simple design which doesn't capture your attention during driving, but it's not so plain that it gets boring either. It looks as great as it works. Personally, I've been on a lookout for a dashcam for quite some time. I've had a lot of close-call experiences lately which might as well have gone the other way. Having a dashcam might not prevent accidents, but at least you can prove whose fault it was. This is definitely the type of dashcam I want in my car!
