Earlier this week information appeared online showing that processor sales throughout the last quarter of 2022 hit an all-time low. The second time, incidentally, this had happened during the year since records were initially started in 1994. – While this was undoubtedly quite shocking news (especially for AMD and Intel) at the time there was another key proxy matter which I did not consider. Namely, motherboards.
I mean, if processors are selling poorly, then surely this must mean that motherboard sales have also been in the doldrums, right? – Well, following a report via TechPowerUp, we have our answer and the answer is an incredibly firm yes! Motherboard sales throughout 2022 were massively below prior years by around 10 million sales!

Motherboard Sales Slump by 10 Million Over 2022
Following the compilation of sales statistics from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock (arguably the four largest and/or most prominent motherboard manufacturers), each company has effectively confirmed a huge drop in motherboard sales with Gigabyte coming out the best at only a 14% comparatively year-on-year drop.
Overall though, it does in many respects make complete sense. If people are not buying processors, why would they be going out en-masse to buy motherboards? Especially since 2022 saw Intel retain the LGA1700 socket and AMD still release processors on the AM4 platform (albeit, with AM5 now upon us). – Even I’ve not bought a new one for 3 years now thanks to the longevity and consistent support AMD has shown for AM4.

With all this being said, however, a lot of people will likely make the argument that sales throughout 2022 were likely so poor predominantly due to higher-than-necessary price tags. And yes, in terms of high-end models (and even mid-tier in many cases), the retail figures can be more than a little eye-watering at times.
What do you think though? When was the last time you purchased a new motherboard? What manufacturer was it from? – Let us know in the comments!
