MSI Oculux NXG253R eSports Gaming Monitor Review

Gaming

One thing that does stand out about this monitor is that it is pretty bright. Actually, a little too bright for my taste, but I’m not an eSports pro. For reading documents, well… memes on reddit, or writing my reviews, the whites were too high. Thankfully, you can use the User Mode to tinker with the brightness.

For gaming, however, the built-in gaming profiles are the best options, and you’ll likely want to experiment with them to find what suits your play style and games the best. However, keep the overdrive to the middle setting, as the most extreme setting looks pretty weird.

When it comes to gaming, this monitor is freaking nuts, it’s honestly bonkers just how god damn fast that refresh rate is. With some higher refresh rate monitors, the difference is pretty impressive. However, when you max out this beast, the difference is profound.

Peaking at 360 FPS at 1080p is not easy. I’m pushing an RTX 2080 and you certainly won’t be hitting ultra graphics even at 1080p. Medium settings will be your friend, frames are the goal here. If you want to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Tamriel in ESO, go get a 4K monitor. If you want to see your enemy leaping between the gates in CS:GO as they pass through your crosshairs get this monitor.

Thankfully, with G-Sync, you’re going to get smooth looking images even when the frame rate is below 360FPS, and honestly, it will be under that a lot. Even with powerful GPUs and DLSS, it’s a big ask. Thankfully, most eSports titles are a little more modest on the requirements, so League of Legends, CS:GO, Rocket League, etc, will be maxed out more easily than Overwatch or Rainbow Six.

I’m certainly not a competitive gamer, actually… I’m pretty crap. However, even I can feel my performance improve on this monitor. While I’m unlikely to bother with Fortnite, like… ever. My son had a tinker on it and seems to want this monitor for Christmas… good luck with that!

For me, playing games like Halo, and Forza (can you tell I have Games Pass Ultimate), are certainly ticking the right boxes. High-speed driving offers tremendous clarity unlike anything I’ve ever seen while gaming at home.

I game on a 4K 60hz monitor daily, I love my pixels. However, the extreme refresh rate is much clearer in fast-moving scenes than my 4K monitor could ever hope to achieve. So for fast movement, refresh rate is king. For strutting around the game world on horseback in RDR2, then resolution will win.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
