Noontec TerraMaster F2-220 2-Bay SMB Cloud Storage NAS Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

At the time of writing, the Noontec TerraMaster F2-220 can be yours for as little as $179.95 or £159.99 on the US and UK versions of Amazon. The TerraMaster F2-220 also has a brother and sister with four and five drive bays For those with more capacity needs.

Overview

The TerraMaster F2-220 is a beautifully crafted NAS that both features a small footprint and a near silent operation. The exterior chassis is made of a thick aluminium shell which aids the system with its cooling. In return, the built-in fan will barely have to work, if at all, and you get a completely silent system except for the noise your drives make. The aluminium shell also gives the NAS a great appearance that is complemented with the minimalistic front.

While the drive trays aren’t tool-less, you don’t need any additional tools other than what’s in the box as TerraMaster also included a screwdriver which also can be used when you want to upgrade the memory of the NAS – because it supports this too.

On the inside, we have the power of a full x86 dual-core processor which delivers a good performance per watt ratio. The CPU is coupled with 2GB RAM which as mentioned above can be upgraded to more. That coupled with up to 8TB drives, provides you with a powerful and silent NAS that can hold plenty of data.

We also saw a great performance from the F2-220 today and we saw a NAS with hardware that is well suited to match each other. It comes with great features from file sharing across all systems to full iSCSI support. You can turn it into your own personal cloud server and you can also back it up to the cloud for extra redundancy. While it doesn’t feature as many apps as some of the other NAS devices on the market, all the basics are covered from web and mail servers to Plex media server and UPnP. The TerraMaster OS is generally a pleasant operating system to work with, it is easy to navigate and well sorted. It also provides a strange sense of peace thanks to the well-chosen background images.

Pros:

  • Good performance
  • Low power consumption
  • Basically silent operation
  • Good looking OS
  • SMB and SOHO usage
  • Personal Cloud usage
  • Low price for an x86 powered NAS

Cons:

  • Not as many apps available as with some other brands

“It was a real pleasure to review my first Noontec TerraMaster NAS today as the F2-220 comes with both features and performance at a low price.”
