With the Nvidia 4080 scheduled for release this November, at the time of writing we’re still awaiting an official update as to exactly when we can expect it to arrive. – With it coming in two VRAM variants, however, (16GB and 12GB) people are clearly anxious to find out more about them and particularly as they represent a possible candidate for their long-overdue GPU upgrade!

Just how good will they actually be though? Well, while we’re still waiting for news on the 12GB version, following a report via DSOGaming, various benchmarks reportedly taken from the Nvidia 4080 16GB have appeared online including both synthetic and gaming results.

We should, of course, note that given that these are leaks well ahead of the Nvidia 4080’s official release (presumably about 4-8 weeks away), their veracity should be taken with a grain of salt. Given how comprehensive they are, however, it does seem pretty clear that someone out there has this graphics card in their possession.

Starting with the 3DMark scores, these are already looking impressive as the 4080 16GB outperforms the 3090 Ti by a margin of roughly 20-30%. A pretty hefty uplift and particularly so given how potent the 3090 Ti still is!

The second comes from Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s inbuilt benchmarking tool. – While direct comparisons are a bit tougher here (as hardware isn’t fully confirmed and this will, of course, vary depending on the source of comparison), we can still see the 4080 16GB scoring a total of 20,180 points with an average 4K framerate of 128FPS. In other words, it’s about circa 20-30FPS higher than most average 3090 Ti results.

The Overwatch 2 results, however, are undoubtedly one of the best visual aids in terms of where the 4080 16GB sits. We should note too though that this also includes results for the 4080 12GB variant which, given that many suspect this might be a 3070/3070 Ti in disguise, does make its placement make a lot of sense given that when compared to the 4080 16GB, it has a much more limited specification. (Not that Nvidia made much of a point of highlighting that during their reveal).

What Do We Think?

Overall, the Nvidia 4080 16GB looks to be an exceptionally impressive graphics card, and more so, these results do appear to validate Nvidia’s claim that it’ll, despite not being top of the 40XX tree, eat up the 3090 Ti in most benchmark tests. – It’s success, however, will undoubtedly be found in how much it’ll really cost when it arrives with retailers next month. With the 16GB variant at $1,199, many might see the 12GB at £899 as a far more tempting (if not affordable) option.
