Online Salon Website Gives Users Option For Ads or Mining

Do you want adverts or can we use your computer for mining?

In the last few weeks, reports have been made of various websites serupticiously using your computer, while visiting, to mine cryptocurrency. The fact that it does it without telling you is clearly quite inappropriate.

One website in the US, however, has taken the unusual step of giving visitors the option. You can either have ads, or they can use your computer for mining.

Decisions, Decisions…

In a report via the BBC, The US online website for the ‘Salon’ magazine has reported taken this unusual step. Using the rather controversial tool, CoinHive, the website on the plus side makes no secret of it, but at the same time, this was the same software used to attack several UK and US government websites.

It, therefore, raises eyebrows if nothing else.

What Salon has said?

As above, they are at least notifying users of this and on their website say: “We intend to use a small percentage of your spare processing power to contribute to the advancement of technological discovery, evolution and innovation.”

Innovation is one thing, but given the choice, I think I would prefer the adverts.

Revenue

It can be hard for a website to generate income. That, we know for a fact. Despite mining being a seemingly good way to do this, I daresay most users would not feel comfortable if this was to become a normal thing.

The bottom line is, at least this gives you the option. I daresay some will opt-in and others out. It does, however, make you think what the future holds.

What do you think? Would you visit a website that employed this option? Would you opt in or out? In addition, would you rather see adverts or allow your PC to be used to mine? – Let us know in the comments!
