Patriot memory has launched another line of SSDs after launching the wildfire drives back in June. These drives use the same controller and interface: Sandforce SF-2200 series on SATA III 6GB/s. The 2.5″ Pyro Drive allows for sequential read of 550MB/s and write of 515MB/s which seems to be a pretty standard speed for these new SATA III sandforce controllers.
William Lai Patriot Memory’s Product Manager had this to say about the new “pyro” SSDs: “The Patriot Memory Pyro will continue to aggressively expand on what consumers can expect out of performance class solid state drives, With near enterprise level performance by utilizing the new SandForce SF-2281, coupled with Patriot Memory’s reputation, Pyro will deliver unmatched price per performance.”
Three capacities are being made immediately available, these are 60GB, 120GB and 240GB while the 480GB model is coming soon. All offer TRIM support and you can expect up to 85,000 IOPS when running 4K blocks. Considering these drives are virtually identical to the Wildfire drives minus 5MB/s on read and 5MB/s on write expect them to be marginally cheaper. And to put that into perspective a current 120GB wildfire costs $300 on Newegg so the 120GB Pyro will likely be around the $280 mark.
