People Try to Chase off Hurricane Irma with Electric Fans

Hurricane Irma

It never hurts to try, right?

Hurricane Irma is a pretty big deal right now. I mean, it’s a Category 5 monster that’s currently heading straight for the US mainland, and that’s seriously scary. In such situations, people try to do what they can in order to cope with the situation, especially if there’s still hope of preventing the danger. It’s true that Irma could very well avoid the US mainland and travel North-East, right back to sea. In order to encourage it to do so, tens of thousands of people have decided to use a rather unconventional method. They’re pointing their electric fans at the hurricane in an attempt to re-direct it.

We’re talking 58,000 people!

It all started with an online campaign on Facebook titled “Everybody Points Their Fans At The Hurricane To Blow It Away”. Believe it or not, the campaign actually went viral, and now more than 58,000 people have joined up in the effort. Not everyone takes it too seriously, though.

Hurricane Irma

“Everyone takes their fans outside and points them at Hurricane Irma to blow it away from us. Air compressors with a blow gun attachment also a plus, or anything else. Get creative. Date/time subject to change due to the unpredictable path it may take.

*Not responsible for any collapsed lungs should you choose to blow manually.”

The big question is: will it even matter? Well, meteorologists have expressed their doubt regarding the solution’s effectiveness. Considering that Irma has sustained wind speed speeds of 150mph and that it’s roughly the size of Texas, it’s safe to assume that pointing fans at it won’t help. Seriously, if you do find yourself in the hurricane’s path, make sure to evacuate or seek shelter as soon as possible!
