Portal 2 “Peer Review” PC Review

Singleplayer:

Although not adding any new maps or single player levels in the DLC, they did add a challenge mode. This is pretty much all of the single player levels with an added feature – you basically challenge your friends! While not directly playing against them, they will be able to see how well you’ve done on each level and in turn you can see how they did. The challenge mode concentrates on how many portals you used to complete the level, and giving you a time after crossing the finishing line (entrance to the lift). Challenge mode was originally in Portal but was omitted from Portal 2 for reasons unknown.

As you can see below, it would seem that out of my 50 steam friends… not too many of them are attempting the challenge mode at the moment! Also no, those weren’t the two portals I used to complete the level… I have a thing for breaking cameras.

Multiplayer:
Now, as I mentioned previously the main element of the DLC is the new Art Therapy section of co-op. Entering the zone will see you through 9 different levels. Each level has a mixture of everything you will have encountered previously, lasers, cubes/spheres, light platforms, excursion funnels and of course the gels. Oh… let’s not forget those pesky little turrets either. While we did see 9 levels introduced, it didn’t add as much gameplay as you may think. If you’re still thinking with portals from the previous play through, or just keep up the practice, you’ll be whizzing through the 9 levels in no time.
Steam has me clocked at 2 hours of gameplay, however there was a good period of AFKs from my partner in crime (he knows who he is..). So all in all you’re probably looking at 60-90 minutes dependant on your skill level, and your partners for that matter.
There is a storyline to the Art Therapy course. P-Body and Atlas are pretty much on a mission to save GLaDOS who is currently being attacked by an unknown source. It’s your job to reach her and vanquish this enemy as an elite killing squad….. equipped with portal guns…

Now being one reviewer that doesn’t wish to spoil storylines, I won’t yap about it anymore, though you may be surprised. That’s all I’m saying. Who do you think it is? Got you wondering now haven’t I?

Challenge mode wasn’t just added to the single player element of Portal 2, it was also given to the multiplayer side. Again as before, any map can be replayed by you and a friend to see what your personal best will be. It’s a good addition to the game if you’re really in to it, but for me the challenge modes just aren’t really that appealing. Although the witty remarks made by the characters throughout the game may have given you a good chuckle the first time around, maybe even the second – it can get very annoying hearing it repeat over and over again if you’re trying to beat your PB. You’d probably find yourself muting the game and listening to some music while playing instead.
