PS4 Pro Suffering TV Connection Failures – But Who’s Fault is it?

For most users, the PlayStation 4 Pro has been working perfectly, but it seems there’s a bug in the system somewhere, and Sony won’t admit it’s their fault, even going as far to say it’s a problem with various TV manufacturers or hardware configurations, but the TV manufacturers are saying it isn’t their fault either… so whose fault is it?

If you’ve fired up your new 4K console and are staring at a blank screen, you’re obviously going to be left scratching your head and contacting Sony for support. Some users are even getting the HDR working, but having their console tell them they can’t run a 4K picture. What makes it weirder still is that this isn’t a unified problem with some users using the same TV having zero issues, while others are getting errors.

According to various forum posts, it looks like the issue is the HDCP handshake, with different games using different colour spaces for HDR, and that could be a major problem. If the system isn’t outputting a single unified format, it could be that some components in people’s AV chains are not passing through the signal the same based on their TV, AV receiver or the game they’re playing.

One fix was suggested to boot PS4 Pro into Safe Mode, and changing the HDCP from 2.2 to 1.4, but this could only lead to further incompatibility issues in some scenarios while fixing others.

Sony is asking users to contact their TV manufacturer for support. Unsurprisingly, TV manufacturers are baffled and telling users to contact Sony. Right now, all we can do is wait for someone to hold their hand up (most likely Sony) and say it’s their fault and get a fix in progress.

Short of trying new HDMI cables, and some hardware reboots, and firmware updates on all hardware, there’s not much we can suggest. However, if you are having troubles with the PS4 video output, we suggest you take the fight to Sony, not your TV manufacturer.
