Razer SW:TOR Edition Headset Review

Before first plugging in the headset I made sure to download the synapse 2.0 drivers from the Razer support site, as the headset is a synapse 2.0 enabled device, which means that all your settings get saved to the cloud for if you use it on different machines. Upon plugging in the device for the first time the synapse software launched and downloaded the relevant drivers and configuration utility for the device. I did find the headset quite tight to  fit over my head when I first put it on, though the manual does suggest stretching it first. Having used the headset solidly for a week though, the headband has stretched out to the size of my head and the headset is incredibly comfortable, to the point where I have quite often forgotten I still have them on.

The first thing I did was decide to have a look at the configuration utility. Upon opening, it is themed for star wars fans, with a gold and red colour scheme and a background of a city skyline, possibly Coruscant. The first screen gives you options to do with the level and balance of the speakers and the level of the mic, with the extras of echo cancelling, automatic gain boost and Mic Boost, pretty standard utilities.

The second tab is a quite comprehensive EQ, ranging from 30 Hz to 16K Hz, which really lets you shape the sound for what you are playing or using your headset for, there are preset EQ templates to choose from but I always find they need tweaking anyways to my personal tastes.

The next tab is for the LED lighting which resides on the headset, which is fully customisable in colour and brightness. You can set it to scroll through the colours or be a set colour all the time. There is also an option to set the LEDs to react to in game events when you are playing SW:TOR but I apart from setting them back to the default yellow I have not seen them change (not that it’s easy to see when you are wearing them anyway).

The configuration software also allows you to generate a code to receive an in-game reward for SW:TOR in the shape of a colour crystal to use in your blaster or lightsaber. This changes the colour of the bade or your blasters bolts to the Razer green surrounded by what can only be described as a black glow, not dissimilar to one you would get off a UV bulb.
