Resident Evil Code Veronica is (Maybe) Getting a Fan Remake

Resident Evil Code Veronica

Although some opinions may vary, I think a lot of Resident Evil fans would agree that Code Veronica was one of the best outings the franchise ever saw. Yes, admittedly, the controls were not great (in fact, I found them bloody awful), and when compared to everything that had come before, it had some difficult moments including, but not limited to, extremely more punishing resource management. Given that this title was last made available on the Xbox 360 and PS3, however, it has been a matter of frustration to many that while Capcom is giving some of Resident Evil’s earlier launches a remake, and now RE4, there is no news yet regarding whether that will ever happen with Code Veronica. I mean, it probably will at some point, but likely not in the near future; watch Capcom now confirm it this Summer, just to spite me.

Well, just in case you too are frustrated with this, there is potentially some good news. Yes, a fan remake is in the works, and through the utilization of the Unity Engine, it’s actually looking more than a little tasty! Well, by fan remake standards.

Although taking a lot of inspiration from the recent Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake, this fan project will still give users the option to feel a more modern or classic experience with a function available to switch between the ‘over the shoulder’ mode and more traditional fixed camera angles.

Boasting a whole range of other improvements, optimisations, puzzles, and features, this does look to be ticking all the right boxes a fan remake could have. As you might expect though, there are still more than a few hurdles in their path. And we’re not just talking developmentally either.

Will We Ever See It?

Getting one elephant out of the room, the future of this project will ultimately rest on if Capcom notices it or not. If they do, then it’s entirely possible, if not probable, that a C&D (cease and desist) order will quickly arrive on their doorstep. More so, while the above gameplay video looks impressive, we daresay that there is still a long way to go before this is completed. And more time it takes ultimately increases the risk of Capcom’s lawyers saying hello.

Given that the next supposed remake from the Resident Evil franchise is RE4 though, it’s clearly a little annoying to many fans that they’ve decided to skip this title (which came before it) in favour of one which, I think it’s fair to say, still looks and plays decently enough today.

All going well though, this will be completed enough to one day see a public release. Albeit, clearly for free as charging for it would definitely raise more than a little hell. If you do, therefore, want to learn more about it, you can check out the game’s official website via the link here!
