A Closer Look

The packaging closely follows the Riotoro branding of red and black and with their distinctive logo is easy to identify at a glance. The front packaging though makes a little gold highlight on the edge. This is, no doubt, a small hint to the gold efficiency rating this power supply has. In terms of the information provided, the front has it all in terms of the basics.

The rear of the box has all of the technical details. This includes the product features and the fan and efficiency charts. We must credit Riotoro for including these as so few manufacturers are brave enough to put physical charts on the packaging. In terms of the layout it’s quite nice, albeit the writing is rather small and white on red isn’t overly easy on the eye.

The only other key point in terms of the packaging is the side of the box which gives you the full cable details. In addition, the other side has the full power output chart which is detailed in the specifications above.

The Power Supply

For an 850W power supply, the design is surprisingly compact. This is an ATX specification though, so don’t think it’s suited to all chasis layouts. In terms of the power supply itself, it has some nice Riotoro branding on it which does stand out nicely.

The fan to the top (or bottom if you prefer) has the Riotoro logo to the centre and a nice sleek presentation. The rear exhaust vent has a nice coverage of honeycomb style gaps. As you can see they have attempted to utilise as much space as possible which should help promote air flow. A good idea considering that this PSU does have a passive cooling mode.

A closer look at the rear hybrid mode button which is amusingly misspelt. Despite that though, it does work and this angle particularly highlights my above point regarding the excellent vent coverage.

The bank of modular connectors is nicely laid out with each port clearly labelled. The gap between the banks is more than large enough to allow for easy installation and removal.

The top of the power supply has all the technical details as well as the chart indicating how the power is allocated through the rails. Overall though, so far this is a nice, clean looking power supply. Time to check out the insides!

Interior

Overall, the internal presentation of the Riotoro Enigma is cool. All parts seem well spaces and cleanly installed. For a power supply with this much power, it’s actually surprising to see it designed so well.

A closer look at the electronics confirms that a decent amount of space has been given between the various components. A positive factor when considering the hybrid cooling mode. In addition the heat sinks are nicely located in a near central position which, when the fan is running, should optimise the cooling.

The power supply is noted in the features as having Japanese bulk capacitors. There might be some question over the plurals here because we could only find one main capacitor. Despite this though, it is a Nichicon 105C rated component which we can confirm is both Japanese and also, in our experience, about the best you can get.

The cooling fan is fairly unremarkable. It’s a design we’ve seen used by various manufacturers, but that’s probably a good thing. If so many are using it, it can’t be bad, can it?
