Not to be outdone by Canon, Sony also announced their new a7 III at the same time as Canon’s M50. The big difference of course is that the a7 III is part of Sony’s Alpha series, and thus more feature packed. It is also a full-frame camera with a 24.2 megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. According to Sony, this sensor is paired with “a front-end LSI that effectively doubles the readout speed of the image sensor,” plus an updated BIONZ X processing-engine that boosts processing speed by approximately 1.8 times in comparison to the a7 II. The camera also boasts an ISO range of 100 to 512000, with 14-bit RAW support as well as a 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivities.
This camera also features dual SD card slots and USB Type-C connectivity. Plus, Sony promises that it has the longest battery life rating of any mirrorless camera on the market. In terms of numbers, they claim it can do 710 shots per charge. To make shooting easier, the back of the camera has a new joystick for easily adjusting focus points. There is also a 2.3-million-dot OLED EVF and a 3-inch touchscreen monitor with adjustable display quality settings.
The most notable feature addition is the full-frame 4K video support. That is with full pixel readout and no pixel binning across the full-width of the sensor. In fact, here is a demo straight from Sony showing off this capability:
Moreover, the camera is also able to shoot 1080p videos at 120fps, which is great for slow-motion shots. It even has Hybrid Log-Gamma, S-Log2/S-Log3, Zebra, Gamma Display assist and more. For more features, check out the official product overview video below:
The actual availability is not until April 2018, and it will cost $1,999 for the body kit only. There will also be an FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens combo for $2,199.
