Source Claims Nvidia 4080 12GB Will Not Get Rebranded – The Spec May Be Dead!

Earlier this month, following a lot of criticism from both fans and the media, Nvidia announced that it would no longer be releasing its 4080 12GB graphics card. While they attempted to play this off as being a decision they made of their own volition (citing they’d misbranded the GPU), it didn’t take a genius to read between the lines that Nvidia only called this a 4080 to warrant a price tag associated with that tier. Not to mention the fact that the 4080 16GB (which is still on the way), despite only seemingly having more memory on the surface of things, actually came with massively more potent specifications.

With the 4080 12GB being officially ‘unlaunched’, however, this did lead to speculation about what future the GPU may have now with some believing it would simply be repurposed into something like the 4070. – Following a report via ‘Moore’s Law is Dead‘, however, citing inside information, they have not only confirmed that the 4070 is going to be based on an entirely different SKU, but more so, the 4080 12GB might actually be completely dead.

In other words, the graphics card may never be released under any kind of different name or branding!

The Nvidia 4080 12GB – Dead Before Arrival!

Releasing rendered images showing what the 4070 may look like when it’s announced (likely in early 2023), the source has said that Nvidia currently has no intentions whatsoever or reintroducing the 4080 12GB. – At best, if it does come back into the picture, it will only do so under notably diminished specifications.

Now, this does, of course, open the doors to it possibly getting utilised as the 4070 Ti, but the key point is that it will almost certainly not be the same GPU specifications merely under a different name. Why? Well, as the source says below (and as I said last week), if Nvidia just re-releases it as a 4070 or 4070 Ti, it only pretty much confirms that this is exactly what the GPU was in the first place!

A factor that would highlight how Nvidia did intentionally misbrand it to a higher tier!

What Do We Think?

Overall, it seems the wisest move for Nvidia to simply sweep the 4080 12GB under the rug in the hope that we’ll all eventually forget they ever launched it in the first place. If they did choose to keep the SKU alive, it just feels that whatever came of it from this point on would only result in more PR disasters for the company.

Put simply, we know what the specs for it are, and if they did attempt to just relaunch it under a new name, it would get spotted in an instant! – As such, simply cutting it down a little and potentially calling it a 4070 Ti does seem to be the only way out of this situation. Will that happen though? Well, we’ll have to wait and see!
