Synology GUI

Synology’s UI has one major factor about it that differs to other systems that I have seen to date and this is that it is not installed on the system until you first set it up. As opposed to other vendors options, the DS414, like other Synology systems, does not have any on-board storage of its own – either in a flash IC form or SOC. Instead the operating system is installed on the hard drives, however its footprint is very minimal. I will note that if you was to replace all the drives in one go, as part of a drive upgrade path, the DSM will need to be re downloaded and setup as though the system is being used for the first time.
