TeamGroup launches Xtreem S2 and Xtreem S3 SSDs

We have seen Patriot, Corsair and Kingston amongst many others all launch their range of SATA III 6GB/s SSDs and now TeamGroup is bringing theirs to market. They have two different series to launch the Xtreem S2 and the Xtreem S3 SSDs. The S2 and S3 series will have identical read and write speeds the only differences are that S3 series will provide more IOPs on the 120 and 240GB models and the S3 series is also to included a 480GB model at a later date whereas the maximum capacity in the S2 series is only 240GB.

Both series will be using the latest Sandforce controller which is the SF2281 series controller and both will be equipped with MLC NAND Flash memory chips. The Windows 7 supported TRIM command (which clears up “waste” files and space) is fully supported and the drives take advantage of the latest and greatest SATA III 6GB/s interface. The Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) is 1.5 million hours which is backed by a 3 year manufacturer warranty. Lets just have a quick look at the breakdown of the specifics of these two series:

(IOPs figures taken on the basis of writing 4K blocks which is the standardised measure of IOPs)

120GB, 550MB/s Read, 500MB/s Write, 80K IOPs
240GB, 550MB/s Read, 520MB/s Write, 90K IOPs
480GB, Specifications to be annouced but it should be highly similar if not identical to the 240GB model.

Prices for these drives are likely to be high as they are the latest technology and we do not know any pricing for specifics but the only confirmed thing here is the S2 drives will be cheaper than the S3 drives by a margin of around 10%.
