Threadripper Features Hidden Fuses Designed To Blow When Overclocked

AMD Ryzen Threadripper

AMDs threadripper CPUs are very expensive and aren’t really something you want to risk breaking through a bit of tinkering and overclocking. Now unlike the X3D chips, AMD doesn’t block overclocking on these chips but it turns out they do include some fuses that are designed to blow when overclocking.

Threadripper Over locking Won’t Void Warranty

As reported by TomsHardware, some misleading claims have been made surrounding overclocking and the warranty on Threadripper CPUs. AMD confirmed that the latest 7000 series chips “do contain a fuse that is blown when overclocking is enabled,” but this blown fuse does not automatically void your warranty.

The clarification here is that overclocking itself isn’t going to void your warranty, but any damage caused from overclocking won’t be covered by the warranty. The blown fuse will simply tell AMD that the damaged processor was overclocked. How AMD will be able to tell when damage wasn’t caused by overclocking even with the blown fuse will be quite interesting.

The rumours and need for clarification all stems from the BIOS warning message that appeared when attempting to overclock the chips. The message was shared on Twitter/X by David Huang stating “Overclocking mode will now be permanently enabled for this processor and effectively void the warranty as previously stated”.

This warning does not represent AMDs official stance and they are working with partners to correct and remove the BIOS warning messages. Thread ripper owners should feel free to overclock to their hearts content, just don’t break it.
