Toshiba Announces 8TB Version of Their X300 Desktop HDD

Toshiba is slowly upgrading all their drive lines with new large-capacity models. The latest series to get an increase to its endowment is the X300 desktop series. The X300 series is now available as 8TB models too, or will be so before the end of the month.

“Availability of the 8TB X300 Series is a testament to Toshiba’s commitment to growing the consumer HDD category and providing the tools needed to achieve varying professional workloads,” said Michael Cassidy, Vice President of Consumer HDDs at TAEC. “Toshiba offers a full internal HDD lineup that targets specific storage applications and grows with your gaming library and digital content.”

X300 Desktop Performance Series

Toshiba’s X300 series is a desktop drive, which means about 8 hours runtime a day. While it is a desktop drive, Toshiba built it for the performance-minded user. That shows in the 7200 RPM spindle speed and 128MB cache. That’s double the cache found in the P300 series, for example.

The series also features high-precision head positioning by advanced format technology (physical 4KB sector) and dual stage actuator technology to deliver high storage density and capacity.

Advanced Technologies

Hard drives might look the same on the outside, but the insides are very different. The X300-series is a desktop series which means that it doesn’t feature a lot of advanced functions. But it isn’t without. For example, the X300 features ramp loading technology which reduces wear to the recording head and media for improved drive reliability. Built-in shock sensors also detect impact. A secured motor shaft at both ends helps reduce system-induced vibrations, stabilising the platters for improved tracking accuracy and performance during read and write operations.

Pricing and Availability

Toshiba didn’t announce a price at this time, but the new 8TB X300 hard disk drives will be available this month. Like the other drives in the series, this one comes with a 2-year warranty.
