If there’s one thing that internet companies should avoid doing is making their users angry. This is no exception even in the case of Google who made the decision to celebrate Labour Leader and activist Cesar Chavez’s birthday on its doodle rather than using Easter day’s theme. This was the catalyst to start of mixed responses, including of which angry users have threatened to switch to Bing.
Although it should be noted that President Obama did declare March 31st, 2013 as Caesar Chavez Day, people have been upset with Google. It should also be noted that Google didn’t create an Easter doodle since 2000, so its not surprising that Google has been avoiding creating any doodles associated with Easter. But in most cases it seems that the hatred is not towards Caesar Chavez, but rather Google’s timing:
A Google spokesperson said,””We enjoy celebrating holidays at Google, but as you may imagine, it’s difficult for us to choose which events to highlight on our site. Sometimes for a given date we feature a historical event or influential figure that we haven’t in the past.”
Looking at the larger userbase and services Google offers, personally I doubt its going to affect Google at all, but will Google be careful when using a person and/or time for a google doodle is another story. On the other hand, the company’s doodle on the search engine isn’t being shown in all countries as its not really relevant.
Is it wrong if Google honours someone with a doodle on the day where its dedicated as a holiday- or people just need to stop reacting to stuff like this? Do let us know!
