Windows 10 May Update Rolls Out But Don’t Expect Big Things

Well, for better or worse, Microsoft has finally confirmed that the May update for Windows 10 has been rolled out and, as such, likely over the next few weeks, you can probably expect to see it get installed onto your PC or laptop. With this representing one of two significant updates planned for this year, though, it’s been well known that the May update was going to represent the less bulky of the two.

Following the publication of the official changelog though, it’s honestly hard to figure out exactly what this is really going to do. Put simply, it’s coming, but it doesn’t seem to actually be changing much. At least, nothing you’ll probably notice!

Windows 10 May Update

In terms of getting any fancy new features or functionality, there is absolutely nothing seemingly on offer here. With an apparent focus on remote work/learning functionality, the three main key features of the update are, quite honestly, rather less significant than many might’ve expected.

  • Windows Hello multicamera support to set the default as the external camera when both external and internal Windows Hello cameras are present.
  • Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements including optimizing document opening scenario times.
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.

What Do We Think?

Even Microsoft themselves have somewhat downplayed the importance of this by saying that, in terms of installation time, users shouldn’t expect anything different than the usual monthly cumulative update. Given that this has been highly anticipated since last year, while the May Update is now out, it’s a bit of a damp squib rather than a bang.

On the plus side, though, with Microsoft seemingly not fiddling with much, who knows, this update might actually manage to install successfully without buggering up any other part of your system!
