When it comes to testing a screen, there are a number of individual factors that every person looks for, I personally look for a crisp bright image, with a real depth of colour (in other words, vibrant reds greens & blues and deep blacks) that doesn’t look washed out when used in a bright environment. At the same time I look for a screen that works not only in a working environment (the environment that my screens spend most of their time) but also for watching movies and gaming.
The primary focus of this panel naturally is gaming and after watching a few benchmark tests through and also playing a bit of Trackmania, I do get a good feel for the screen and as to how it appeals to gamers in particular. The matte finish to the panel almost eliminates any glare and the high refresh rate produces images that are consistently smooth, no matter what the content is.
During day-to-day use, the screen felt comfortable to use, the matte panel again reducing the straining effect on the eyes that some screens tend to give – showing the real benefit of LED over LCD. Colour reproduction however left me a little disheartened. After seeing this screen at a few events and even after having a play around with it myself, colours didn’t seem to pop out enough for me.
Using Toy Story 3 as I always do, the image did not seem as vivid as it has done on other panels. Having a play around in the settings did see a slight improvement when the DCB (Dynamic Colour Boost) mode was enabled as expected although the image did still feel a little flat.
