The Accelero Xtreme 7970 is actually only a few centimetres bigger than the stock AMD HD 7970 cooler. The propeller fan style that’s used instead of the blower style fan we see on the stock HD 7970 cooler means most of the hot air is expelled into the case not out the back of the case.
The Accelero Xtreme 7970 is a fair bit thicker than the stock HD 7970 cooler but not enough for it to venture into triple slot territory. And as already mentioned the cooler still allows for the ability to run CrossFireX.
As you can see the Accelero Xtreme 7970 mounts in a way which means it adds more length to the card. Even though the stock cooler and Accelero Xtreme 7970 are similar in length, the Accelero Xtreme 7970 is offset to the right on the HD 7970 PCB meaning it sticks out a few inches at the end more than the stock cooler does.
