Buffalo TeraStation TS6400DN 16TB SMB NAS Review

A Closer Look at the Device

It is time for us to take a closer look at the device itself. It is a simple but beautifully designed unit which I quite like.

Front-Facing Features

At a first glance, the front seems very simple. That is because the drive trays are hidden behind a door panel. But that isn’t all there is to highlight on this Buffalo TeraStation TS6400DN NAS.

At the top of the unit, you’ll find a status display which will show information as well as possible errors. there’s also a series of LEDs for various information and status. This is also where the power button is located.

The door panel is locked, but once opened, it looks like this. You get four horizontally loaded drive trays. The door features a foam-like material which filters dirt out and helps to reduce noise generated from the installed HDDs. Both the drive trays and the unit is labelled which allows you to insert the drives where you took them out with ease.

Rear-Facing Features

The rear side of the TS6400DN is as you would expect it to be. We find the power supply at the top where you can connect a traditional power cable.

Below the power supply is the large fan which will keep the unit cool at all times.

Next to the fan, you’ll find all the connectors. There are the three Ethernet ports as well as the two USB 3.0 ports. The last port isn’t for users, but rather one that is used by the factory when creating and flashing the unit. It looks to be a VGA D-Sub monitor port.

Bottom View

The bottom isn’t spectacular at all, but it is stil important. We find four rubber feet here which not only help catch vibrations, but also make sure that the unit stays in its place.

Side View

The only feature you’ll find on both sides are the 6 vent holes at the top front from where the unit can draw in fresh air.

Top View

The top doesn’t have any features as such. There’s only a sticker which shows that it’s made in Japan.

Drive Trays

The drive trays are already populated with the included 3.5-inch drives, but they can also take 2.5-inch drives should you want to replace them with modern NAS SSDs.
