Cooler Master GM238-FFS Gaming Monitor Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The Cooler Master 23.8″ 144Hz Full HD IPS Adaptive Sync Gaming Monitor is available now from Scan.co.uk but the stock should be landing at other retailers soon enough too. It’s priced at just £159.99 and frankly, I think that’s a bit of a bargain. For an entry-level to high-end gaming monitors, it’s pretty fantastic for those looking for a taste of high refresh rate gaming at an accessible level.

Overview

Cooler Master has absolutely nailed it with this monitor, and I really love it. While I’m a gamer that uses a 32″ monitor, stepping down to a 23.8″ FHD monitor wasn’t so bad really, I just moved it closer to me. The fact it’s equipped with an UltraSpeed IPS 144Hz panel gives it some serious competitive edge though. There are no ghosting issues, and with with Dynamic Overdrive and Adaptive Sync you can push the responsiveness even further while reducing the risk of screen tearing. Being able to game with V-sync off in Apex Legends meant my render time and latency were cut in half.

The colours look superb, and the monitor has great sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage that I would expect from much more expensive monitors. Albeit, this is an expensive monitor relative to its size, but it’s certainly a cut above your typical Full-HD monitors. The pixel density is excellent at 92.6 pixels-per-inch (PPI) so 23.8″ makes good sense for 1920×1080. Text and images look clean and sharp, making it good for productivity, content creation, and gaming.

Obviously, I used this monitor in a fairly unique fashion, but since Ultraspeed IPS panels are up to 4x faster than traditional IPS panels when it comes to response times, combined with the high refresh rate and overdrive features, playing fast-paced arcade games and pinball on this monitor was an absolute riot. Plus, some of those old arcade games use unique refresh rates, and Adaptive Sync really helps with that. It’s exactly what I needed as a secondary display for my vertical gaming needs.

Should I Buy One?

Stylish, well-made, and feature-packed, the CM238-FFS may be small, but it packs one hell of a punch. For those wanting a reasonably priced monitor that can deliver great colours and high refresh rates, this one is really hard to beat. Plus, as you saw, it makes a great option for a secondary monitor too.
