Cooler Master Silencio 550 Chassis Review

Final ThoughtsThere is so much I like about this case, the USB 3.0 port, the SD card reader, the 3.5″ hd dock, the optical drive locking device and the general aesthetics of the case. Let’s be frank this case does look pretty damn good – which is of course impressive for a case that is also pretty quiet.

However, the case attracts dust and fingerprints are very obvious, which means the case will never look as good as in the pictures. In fact, even after just a few hours of use the front mirror finish was qutie frankly not even reflecting. I know that all cases collect dust but this case just exaggerates any form of dirt 500* more than anything else I’ve ever seen.

Also, due to the sound proofing, which is fairly good, the airflow of this case is not brilliant and my motherboard temperature is running a good 3/4 degrees hotter than it would do in other (cheaper) cases on the market. This is clearly not a big problem, but it does hamper the performance of any cooling fans and systems out there. On top of this, the front panel when closed actually restricts the airflow even more – or more the other way round, if you open the front panel up more air is pumped through the system – but then of course the case is generally louder. It is not quite the whisper quiet that I was expecting and that other people have claimed.

My final note: I have heard quieter cases and I have seen better performance cases but its certainly rare that you find one that performs well in both categories, looks good and has plenty of extra features and all this for a very reasonable price. Cooler Master have done what they set out to do and have done it well, I highly recommend this case as an all-round performance case that is quite quiet.

Pros:

  • Goodsound levels – pretty quiet
  • Looks good when cleaned!
  • 3.5″ HD ‘dock’
  • Plenty of space for extra hd’s, etc
  • Well built and pretty solid

Cons:

  • Will never look as good as it does in the pictures.
  • Airflow is not that competitive with other cases
  • Very heavy case!
