Video card sales are doing well right now considering cryptocurrency miners are buying it often in bulk. Even many store shelves are left empty and some even resort to renting entire planes to ship them. The sales are much better than analysts predicted for this quarter. However, they also believe it is about to slow down a lot by December. Cryptocurrency demand is the driving strength in Nvidia GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 graphics card sales. According to GPU manufacturers, pricing is also up by ~25% over the last six months. The continued demand despite the strong pricing is why manufacturers are prefectly happy with the way things are.
Although China has moved to ban cryptocurrency exchanges, some analysts still believe this is not enough to hamper sales. Instead, the shortage of DRAM might be a more effective deterrent at doing that. Also according to some analysts, China’s ban will likely just increase the demand for mining GPUs more since buying directly or exchanges are not legal. This leaves mining as the best way to obtain the currency.
This still leaves gamers and those interested in purchasing a video card for desktop use at a disadvantage. Not only will the price continue to rise until December, the limited DRAM supply will ensure that the price will stay up. That is even if the GPU cryptocurrency demand wanes at all.
