Facebook Formally Appeal UK Cambridge Analytica Fine
The Cambridge Analytica scandal earlier this year has certainly been one of the biggest headaches for Facebook. If you have forgotten the details, it was revealed that a ‘survey’ game utilised on Facebook was found to have gathered and shared users personal data. Following an investigation (and Mark Zuckerberg appearing before the US Senate and an EU commission) the UK decided to fine the social media site £500,000.
While some felt that this was a strong indication of intent moving forward, others believed that the fine was far too lenient (despite this being the maximum allowed under current regulatory law).
Well, nearly a month has passed, but in a report via the BBC, Facebook has formally appealed the fine.
Grounds For Appeal
The social media site has said that following their own investigation, they do not believe that the data collected was misused. As such, the fine itself isn’t warranted. It should be noted that Facebook only decided to issue the appeal on the final day possible. I daresay that their lawyers have been looking at this closely during that time and it appears, at least on the surface, they think they have a case.
What Will Happen Now?
Well, just when you thought the dust was selling, it’s all about to be kicked up again. In fairness, it’s a bold move. Any further investigation will, of course, keep the matter in the public interest. Something that may see further erosion of the already damaged public perception of the company.
As for if it will be successful though, we’ll just have to wait and see!
