FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W Power Supply Review

How Much Does it Cost?

Although UK availability was somewhat limited at the time of writing, it appears that the typical retail price of the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro 1000W power supply is something in the region of £200 (the retailers we found typically varied in this price by £10 one way or the other). – Now, presuming that this price is proven accurate, it does make the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro a little more expensive when compared to other similarly specced alternatives. And don’t confuse this with PSUs with a lower efficiency rating either (such as Gold).

The major redeeming factor for the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro, however, is undoubtedly seen in its huge 10-year-warranty which does make the price seem a lot better value for money when a lot of its competition will only offer 3 or 5-year warranties.

Performance

As shown throughout our testing, the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is undoubtedly a well-designed and high-specification power supply. A particular highlight was undoubtedly seen in the efficiency testing where, despite its already lofty 80-Plus Platinum rating, this PSU actually scored closer to the remits of the top-spec Titanium certification.

In terms of performance, the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is absolutely faultless.

Practicality & Functionality

With its slim design, the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro clearly offers a lot of practical features in terms of actually using this within a PC case. With its fully-modular cable design too, this means you only need to install the components you need. Additionally, we should also note that the cable length is more than generous giving users no excuse for poor management/untidy management.

The hybrid functionality is certainly a nice option, but in truth, given how quiet the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is under its standard fan mode, we don’t think most consumers will really see (or hear) that much benefit from it.

It is perhaps a little disappointing that this has neither ATX 3.0 nor PCIe Gen5 compatibility, but in this regard, we’re still a long way off tech-wise from ever hitting those remits. With that being said though, I do wonder whether some consumers may be put off by the lack of the new 12-pin cable, even despite the fact that we’re going to be in the realms of adaptor kits for many years to come!

Should I Buy One?

The FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is undoubtedly a fantastic power supply and consumers should have no hesitation in choosing this as a truly high-end and quality option. As noted earlier in this review, however, I’m not personally a fan of the general aesthetics of this power supply. It has that somewhat unfortunate tinge we see in some products which gives you the impression that it’s being targeted more towards younger consumers who are more impressed with fancy brash marketing. This is, however, just my personal opinion, and, let’s be honest, when installed you’re probably never going to see it again anyway!

Presentationally, I think FSP would’ve been better served to play into the exceptionally high levels of performance the Hydro PTM X Pro offers in a more professional ethos because don’t get me wrong, this is a fantastic PSU as clearly and consistently indicated throughout our testing, but kind of looks like they were hoping this would end up in a case with ARGB ablaze with maybe an infinity glass panel on the front.

In conclusion though, while I personally think it’s somewhat aesthetically challenged, the FSP Hydro PTM X Pro is an amazing power supply, and with that huge warranty, one that’s clearly built to offer you consistently high levels of performance for many years to come!
