Netis WF2415 300Mbit Wireless N Gigabit Router Review

Introduction Today I'm taking a look at the Netis WF2415 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router. A simple approach, but one that looks like it offers anything you could want in a normal home. The Netis WF2415 offers wireless N speeds up to 300Mbps as well as full Gigabit transfer speeds on all RJ45 ports, including the WAN port. It also has a WPS button for ease of use and connecting your wireless devices to your network. Four Gigabit LAN ports should be enough at most times and it's rare to see more. The WF2415 can act in a variety of modes such as AP, WDS, AP+WDS, Client and Repeater; this makes it pretty much universally usable. The mounting system allows you to hang the router in any direction. A simple but clever approach and one that works each time. The two 5dBi high gain antennas are fixed and can't be removed or replaced - at least not easily. Inside the router, we find a Realtek RTL8198 SoC processor specifically designed for use with routing as well as the Realtek RTL8192CE highly integrated single-chip MIMO (Multiple In, Multiple Out) Wireless LAN (WLAN) solution. While nothing of this blows our mind, it sounds like a solid choice in a basic router - one that could easily satisfy the needs of most people. User Interface The Netis WF2415 has a very simple and easy to use interface. There is a great amount of help built directly into the interface, helping and guiding you through the processes you might not be so familiar with. It features most things you could want in a router from VPN tunneling over Dynamic DNS services, MAC and IP filtering to static routes and server forwards. Software used: PassMark PerformanceTest Suite The Netis WF2415 is a fairly simple router and as such also simple to benchmark. I will first be testing the Ethernet capabilities with fixed and then variable packet sizes. Once the wired speeds are collected, I'll be switching to the wireless connection. I will then be running the same tests on the WiFi bands and at three different distances. These test should give us a fair image of what the router is capable of performing. Wired LAN Performance Fixed Block Size To test the maximum throughput speed that a connection can handle, a fixed block size of 16384 Bytes is sent from the client to the server over a period of five minutes. The higher block size will allow the transfer rate to stay as high as possible – in the same way that large files transfer from one drive to another quicker than lots of small files of the same total size. Variable Packet Size In a real world situation, the blocks of data that pass through a network adaptor are not of the same size each time, so to give a more realistic impression of how an adaptor performs, the adaptor is once again tested for a period of five minutes. This time however, the block size will vary from 32 Bytes up to 16384 Bytes in increasing steps of 148.7 Bytes each time. The Netis WF2415 Wireless Gigabit Router performs pretty great on the wired connection, reaching very close to the theoretical maximum of 1Gbps. Variable packet sized are naturally slower, but the WF2415 also did great at those. WLAN 2.4GHz 802.11n Performance The 2.4GHz band is the older of the two wireless bands that are in use today. On this band we find 802.11b/g/n wireless standards with up to 600Mbps bandwidth on offer when using wireless-n compliant devices. Due to the lower operating frequency, 2.4GHz signals offer a wider level of coverage, but the lower throughput speeds are a disadvantage to this ageing band. Fixed Block Size To test the maximum throughput speed that a wireless connection can handle, a fixed block size of 16384 Bytes is sent from the client to the server over a period of five minutes. Whilst the lower end speeds of the 2.4GHz band are lower than those we have seen on other routers, the results are still great. The router shined especially at the medium distance. Final Thoughts Pricing The availability and price on the Neris WF2415 300Mbit Gigabit Router variates a bit, but you can find some good deals if you search a bit. German readers can find through Geizhals starting at €36.84, British-based readers can find it on Amazon for £33.95 and if you should be located in the US, you can find it at Amazon for $47.99. Conclusion The Netis WF2415 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router did a really good job in our tests, and far better than I would have expected from it when first unpacking it. It looks very basic and comes with basic functions, but it does what it does great. Sometimes less is more, especially if you don't need the rest. The WF2415 doesn't come with any USB ports to attach storage directly nor can you replace the antennas - so if those are two things that you're looking for, this isn't the right choice. But if that shouldn't bother you, the WF2415 could be a solid choice. There really isn't any need to pay a lot for a brand new AC router with USB 3.0 ports, download manager and more when one doesn't need it. If your wireless devices only use the N band anyway, then the AC speeds won't be of any benefit. The user interface is very easy and straight forward - and filled with tips to help you create your setup. You might click a couple of times to find what you're looking for the first times, but after a short while everything will seem logic. The WF2415 wasn't so great when moving it far away, but on medium to small distances it did great.
