Last month information appeared online suggesting that Nvidia was planning a number of new revisions to its entry-to-mid-tier 30XX graphics cards. While the information was quite varied (and you can click here for more info) the two key pieces of information were that the 3060 Ti was getting an upgrade to GDDR6X memory while the 3060 (non-Ti) was getting downgraded to 8GB (while still retaining GDDR6) of VRAM.
Now, in regards to the former, information appeared online earlier this week seemingly confirming that the 3060 Ti was indeed getting revised to a new GDDR6X memory platform. What about the standard 3060 though? Well, following a report via Videocardz, while it does appear that it is getting revised, the somewhat surprising news (contradicting all prior rumours) is that it isn’t, apparently, getting a downgrade!
Now, just to clarify the prior rumours, it was understood that the Nvidia 3060 was set to get downgraded from 12GB of VRAM to 8GB on a new 128-bit memory bus. Why would they make it weaker? Well, ultimately, for two reasons. Firstly, to bring its VRAM more in line with the 3060 Ti (of which it’s always been baffling why the higher tier GPU had more memory). Secondly though, to potentially allow it to come to the market at a notably lower price point.
Following a new retail listing appearing online, however, a Lenovo 3060 has been spotted which doesn’t just confirm that it’s sticking to its 12GB of VRAM, but more so, that it’s actually getting upgraded to GDDR6X. – In other words, this version should be superior to the original.
It is, of course, entirely possible that the mention of GDDR6X memory in this listing is an error. It would, after all, be an entirely understandable mistake to make for someone making these posts who may have no familiarity with the GPU’s actual specifications. A factor, incidentally, backed up by the fact that the other details listed (such as memory speed) have not been increased.
With this in mind, therefore, I’m more erring towards this being a typographical error rather than the actual revised 3060. – I just honestly don’t see what a 3060 being upgraded to GDDR6X would actually achieve in the grand scheme of things.
