The Seagate Ultra Touch 4TB USB-C External HDD is available now from Amazon for a very reasonable £139.99. That is on the upper end of the spectrum for a 4TB external drive price, as even Seagate make some cheaper ones such as the STGX4000400 which has a list price of £129.99 but is currently on sale for £20 less than that. Albeit, these deals swap around constantly, so for all I know, next month these two will simply trade prices, so it’s certainly best to watch trends and shop around.
I love this little drive, it’s so simple, clean and tidy looking. Plus, it’s very much in touch with the times, and using both recycled plastics in its chassis construction and fully recyclable packaging too means a little less new plastic in the world. If more brands continue this post-consumer plastic recycling trend, which it appears they are, then it can quickly add up to a significant difference. It’s not going to fix the world in one go, but every literally quite literally helps things get better, or at the least, slows the rate we’re doing damage.
The core hardware is nothing new here, it’s a pretty standard 2.5″ HDD in a plastic enclosure. That’s not a slight on Seagate either, it’s just what a cheaper and compact portable drive is made from and there are certainly a few rival products out there that are similarly priced and offer the same capacity options, that largely look about the same size too.
When it comes to the build quality, the recycled materials feel as durable as you might expect. However, I actually prefer this lightly speckled finish compared to the clean flat new plastics. It gives it a more interesting surface finish and looks like the sort of thing someone would pick for a kitchen worktop. The little hint of green looks good too. But I guess just as importantly, it just looks nice and having it next to your laptop or computer, or whatever, isn’t going to garner any compliments from passers-by about it, but it’s not going to look out of place either.
Many PCs are still limited with a small SSD, especially more affordable work-type laptops, and while you can add a second hard drive internally, having the portability and flexibility of being able to move the drive between systems and even locations certainly has its advantages. The Seagate Ultra Touch is perfect for keeping all your photos, movies, music and documents accessible no matter what system you’re using or where you’re using it.
