Nintendo Reveals SNES Classic Sales Top 4m Units

SNES Classic

Built it and they will come. When Nintendo launched the NES classic, fans were delighted to see some of their favourites brought back to their TV screens. It did, however, invite the next inevitable question, when (and would) there be a SNES classic?

Well, it seemed a pretty dumb question. Of course, there would be. Then again, Nintendo’s absolute failure to keep the supply on track with the demand of the NES classic did make people wonder if they actually wanted to make money with this.

Supply and demand

The SNES classic managed to keep reasonably up-to-date with supply and demand lines. This has certainly played a major factor in the report via Eurogamer showing that sales of the mini-console have now topped over 4m units. There was a time, however, when people legitimately worried if they would be able to get theirs.

Between Amibo’s, The Switch and The NES classic, Nintendo had a shocking reputation for meeting demand. Some of which even led to allegations that they deliberately withheld stock to inflate demand. Something which Nintendo has always denied.

State of the release

Fortunately, on release, supply was pretty good. Presuming, of course, you went to the trouble of pre-ordering. I certainly did and found no problems when I collected mine. From a reasonable low key toy store, I noted at least 200 in the back room, so it seemed that supply was good.

While it, of course, could be better, the scalping that was seen with the NES classic has been a little more benign for the SNES Classic.

Whats next?

Well, upon the release of the SNES classic, people already immediately began asking if there would be an N64 classic. It’s at this point that things become a little trickier. Aside from a handful of excellent games, the N64 has not aged nearly as well as it’s older iterations. GoldenEye, while amazing in 1997, looks pretty awful these days.

An N64 classic is certainly a possibility, but it would perhaps be best served maybe incorporating some form of the far less successful GameCube into it.

What do you think? Did you buy a SNES of NES classic? Did you have any difficulty getting your copy? Think Nintendo will do a new ‘classic’? – Let us know in the comments!
