Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB Sync Edition PSU Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

Although the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand Series RGB Sync Edition wasn’t available for retail sale at the time of writing, we expect this power supply to cost in the region of £110-£120. This might seem like a fairly high outlay for a power supply, but there are certain factors with this model that need to be taken into consideration. You have the excellent efficiency and PFC ratings, the 850W of power it outputs, the gold efficiency rating (that in testing is borderline Titanium) and of course those fantastic RGB effects which with this model are now sync capable.

When you add all of those factors up, this power supply represents some excellent value. Particularly when compared to similar power supplies that have no RGB lighting, let alone sync capability.

Overview

We have seen various Thermaltake power supplies in the past and while the RGB lighting is impressive, it’s not the key factor of this specific product. Remember that this is the first time that they have released one of their RGB power supplies that has RGB sync capability. That is something new and very special. For those who like a colour coordinated system, that power supply is surely going to get their attention.

Forgetting the RGB lighting for a second, this is still an amazingly impressive power supply in terms of both it’s looks and performance. The light show here isn’t meant to be a distraction from the power!

Efficiency and Beyond

The figures speak for themselves here. The Thermaltake Toughpower Grand Series RGB Sync Edition provided excellent results in every test we conducted. A particular highlight though was the above requirement efficiency rating and, of course, that 0.99 PFC scoring. We again highlight that in this area of testing, the highest score possible is 1. That should tell you a lot about the quality of this power supply and the fantastic build quality Thermaltake offer in their designs.

As far as we can tell, it is completely faultless in design.

Should I Buy One?

Yes, you should. Why? Because in terms of a power supply the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand Series RGB Sync Edition ticks all of the right boxes. It’s 850w, more than enough for most gaming systems. It’s gold-rated, so you know it delivers the power efficiently. The test results as a whole are fantastic. It has a strong design throughout including the excellent presentation of the internal components. Finally, it has that unique Thermaltake patented lighting which is now sync capable.

What else is there to say? This power supply is near perfect. The only reason you might not want this is because of the RGB lighting. Remember though, even if you have a pathological hatred of it, you can still turn it off with this power supply. You are not obligated to use it, but come on… why wouldn’t you!

The light show isn’t there to cause a distraction. For the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand Series RGB Sync Edition it’s the icing on the cake!
