XFX Pro850W Black Edition Fully Modular Power Supply Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

The XFX Pro850W Black Edition Power Supply can be purchased from Scan.co.uk for a very reasonable £89.99. This is an absolute bargain given the level or performance we’ve seen here today.

Conclusion

Is this the best PSU we’ve ever tested, no it’s not, but it certainly exceeded our expectations in literally every respect and that puts it very high on my list of greatness. It doesn’t have a huge maximum wattage, so it’s not going to be ideal for extremely high-end stuff, but for a decent high-end dual GPU gaming system, this unit has got more than enough grunt, and then some, to deliver the goods you need.

850W is quite a lot of power, but even then, we got nearly 1200W out of this unit with no issues. I wouldn’t recommend running it like that all day, but without a doubt, it’ll handle a few power spikes when you’re benchmarking without breaking a sweat. The fan is super quiet and even more so given that it doesn’t spin at all in Hybrid mode, although your mileage will vary once it’s installed in a chassis and has heat surrounding it from other components, not sitting on an open-air test bench like we used.

Build quality is great, although I wouldn’t have expected anything less given it was manufactured by Seasonic. This is reflected in the performance, as you’ve seen throughout our tests, everything was performing far better than expected. The ripple was low, the voltage regulation was superb, the unit was cool and quiet and it was capable of pushing very high wattage with performance that sits comfortably in the 80 Plus Platinum specifications, exceeding the 80 Plus Gold rating of this unit!

Pros

  • Fully modular cables
  • Great build quality
  • Exceeded 80 Plus gold Efficiency rating
  • Tight ripple suppression
  • Exceeded rated wattage
  • Hybrid fan mode
  • Competitive price

Cons

  • None

“There’s no doubt about it, this is an amazing power supply. It’s priced cheap enough to be competitive with similar specification units, yet it offers better performance, efficiency and more than you would expect, making this an essential purchase!”
