Thermaltake Smart BX1 RGB 550w Power Supply Review

How Much Does It Cost?

The Thermaltake Smart BX1 RGB 550w power supply retails for a price in the region of £50. This clearly represents what many would consider the tier immediately above the bargain basement of power supplies.

Now, we regularly recommend people against going cheap on their power supplies and £50 is usually the best starting point. When taking this into consideration with what the Thermaltake Smart BX1 RGB 550w offers, however, it’s pretty clear that this power supply is something of a bargain!

Performance

As shown consistently through our testing, for a power supply of this type, it performs well beyond the usual expectations and remits that consumers would apply.

This is perhaps best highlighted in the fact that despite it being a bronze rated power supply, it tip-toes into the realms of ‘silver’ on more than a few occasions.

With a main Japanese capacitor, 5-year guarantee and clearly excellent internal design, this power supply is build to last and, with the RGB lighting, look absolutely fantastic while doing it!

Practicality & Functionality

Offering 550w of power, this will more than meet the needs of your standard to mid-tier gaming PC. Admittedly, the non-modular design will be an instant turn off for a number of people. We would admit, such designs are getting dated. There is, however, still nothing wrong with them in the right circumstances!

If you can, however, get over that (or simply don’t care) this power supply has a near bullet-proof design. The cables have a nice flexible nature. In addition, you are given more than enough to hook up any standard gaming system.

Finally, the RGB lighting and simple one-touch button controls make this ideal for those who are either new or experienced hands in PC building.

Should I Buy One?

You are, of course, not exactly struggling to find inexpensive power supplies. Particularly those in this particular band of power output. So what makes the Thermaltake Smart BX1 RGB stand out? – Does it stand out at all?

Well, the answer is a very emphatic yes. Based on many similar power supplies, this one offers consumers a lot beyond the usual remit. Particularly that you’d expect in this price range. Quality design, quality components and a performance that is well beyond that expected in the price bracket. How can you possibly grumble at that?
