Nvidia GTX 1080 Pre-Orders Sell Out in Minutes

Nvidia GTX 1080 Pre-Orders Sell Out in Minutes

After years of 28nm GPUs, the market is ready for the best and latest to come out. Nvidia led this generation with their GTX 1080 Pascal GPU on the 16nm process. After reviews came out earlier this week, we were able to crown the new performance king. With availability to start next week, pre-orders popped up today and boy did they fly.

Retail availability is set to occur on May 27th this coming Friday but several e-tailers started their first round of pre-orders today. Despite only popping up for a few minutes, Amazon, Newegg and Best Buy all sold out of their pre-orders within minutes. This went for all brands like MSI, ASUS, EVGA, Gigabyte, Zotac and PNY. I guess when they are all reference model Founders Edition, it doesn’t matter too much which card you buy.

Given the performance, it’s not surprising there is so much pent-up demand. Of course, many of these pre-order cards might get resold on eBay for a hefty premium as many listings there have already popped up. For those who missed out, I wouldn’t worry too much as the chances of getting the few pre-order units is pretty slim. I suspect we’ll see several more rounds of pre-orders to occur in the coming week.

  1. so many fanboys buying the overpriced Founders edition, lmao.
(We don’t know how many they actually had though of course)

    1. so many fanboyz that want a card that brings great performance and is new, and not just some rebrand of the previous gen like another gpu maker does.

      1. So the GTX 760, 760Ti and 770 weren’t rebrands of the GTX 680, which was also a 660, 660Ti and a 670? Everyone of them based on GK104. I could keep going, but the point is, don’t lie to yourself.

        1. No such thing as a 760 Ti, and the 760 was the 670 with 1 more module disabled. That’s not the same as a rebrand. Basing cards off an older architecture is not a rebrand. Taking old cards and giving them new names is (7970 to 280X, 290/290X to 390/390X).

          1. “I’m not saying AMD doesn’t rebrand”
Says the guy who spouts fanboyisms like “don’t lie to yourself”.

          2. Fanboy? Wow. There’s only 1 of us exhibiting fanboy behavior with their inability to accept facts. Have a nice day.

          3. Yah, you kind of did 🙁 Both companies do it and have done it for years. Agree with that at least and move on.

      2. Still no reason to buy a founders edition card. It’s going to be worse in every way when custom cards come out.

          1. Gee some job it’s doing. The 1080 hits 82c in less than 2 min and throttles. Vapor chamber…high quality components. HA.
” crappy custom fan job”…can you name one instance where the reference version of a card is better than a AIB partner version?

  2. I think Ebay should agree not to help resellers. There’s obviously a high enough demand among legit buyers who’re willing to purchase at suggested retail value.

    1. You suck cawk for bus fare? That’s kind of sad. You do what for how many jelly beans? Jees I thought I had it rough.

    1. AMD is targeting mobile and integrated first. I wouldn’t expect them to be competitive in the performance desktop market for another 1.5 years.

  3. This information is innacurate. While I’m unsure of whether people who managed to order the 1080 when stock was added will receive their orders, I have seen people’s responses from amazon. Multiple users have been contacted by amazon saying that there orders are subject to cancellation as they will absolutely not be taking preorders.

The cards were listed as out of stock before any of the 5 minute lapses when people apparently got them and that certainly wasn’t the case. This just means the products are listed but amazon has not put the stock into the system.

Also why would Amazon be the only company taking preorders? Why would they be blatantly lying to their customers? I’m very confident that they are not sold out and I can assure you that you will see them for sale from amazon on the 27th.

    1. And how do we know you’re telling the truth and not an AMD shill? Oh wait, you have no proof for your claims. That settles it.

      1. What do you mean how do we know he’s telling the truth? “claims”?He’s not making a claim of fact. His post is a logical break down of what’s going on. Is English not your first language or do you need to rethink your question?

        1. Yes, he is. If “I have seen people’s responses from Amazon, etc.” is not a claim of fact, what is? You tell me.

          1. Also, you have to give me a smiley face emoticon on Friday if Amazon sells any 1080s.

          2. Now they are, the point was that they weren’t sold out in the first place which is proven by the fact that they sold today.

Amazon and Newegg have both opened GTX 1080’s orders today.

I heard Microcenter is selling them in store only.

          3. Lol, literally a confirmed fact. I literally get tired of being right all the time. It’s just not even fun anymore.

          4. If you cant grasp what he’s saying I don’t know what else to say. It’s like arguing about pink elephants.
I havnt been able to preorder my self. They will be available on Friday and they arent sold out. How can you sell out when there’s no stock, think about it.

          5. Psychological projection at its finest. How can you preorder something that is already sold out?

          6. You cant preoder simply because… you can’t preorder. Not because they’re sold out. NCIX won’t let me preorder. I can order on the 27th, plain and simple.

      1. But I don’t think many normal consumers will pay for that because although early access is a thing, I think people in the tech and gaming community are much smarter than this and would wait for a custom cooled third party card which is overclocked.

        1. Oh I know, but some people will. Go look on amazon, people have them up for $1900 lol… Hey, I will buy things to sell on ebay to make some cash, but more than double the regular price? Greedy much? While I agree with you, there will be plenty of morons that will pay the premium price for no reason at all.

          1. haha not greedy at all actually. Ebay is the one making the most money.. almost 15% of the sale huh… but hey .. if people got money to throw and make more out of it, they don’t miss the hustle.

  4. I’m a GTX 770 (EVGA) guy. I ran to every store yesterday here in Canada and no one has any GTX 1080 (or GTX 1070) in stock. They all estimated sometime after July 20th.

I guess I’ll have to wait.

btw, I get the max performance out of all games on 1080p, but since I got a 4K monitor none of the recent games (Witcher 3 and after) run over 25 fps. I’ve heard even a single gtx 1080 still won’t give you 60fps 4K. That is why I’m going for the SLI 1080.
